What is Traffic Jam?

Traffic Jam is a spatial puzzle game in which you must untangle a gridlocked road intersection by moving vehicles in the correct sequence to clear a path for the target car. The concept is directly related to the classic Rush Hour sliding block puzzle - vehicles can only move in the direction they face, and clearing a path requires moving other vehicles out of the way in the correct order, which often requires moving still other vehicles to create the space needed for those moves. How to Play Traffic Jam

Each puzzle presents a grid filled with vehicles of different sizes oriented horizontally or vertically. You click or drag a vehicle to slide it along its lane - a horizontal car can only move left or right, a vertical lorry can only move up or down. The goal is to create a clear path for the highlighted target vehicle to exit the grid through the designated exit point. Vehicles block each other's movement, so clearing the target's path requires a chain of moves that create space progressively. Simple puzzles require two or three moves. Complex puzzles require fifteen or more moves in a specific sequence where each move enables the next.

Spatial Reasoning and Move Planning

Traffic Jam develops spatial reasoning skills more directly than almost any other browser puzzle format. The ability to visualise how a sequence of moves will reconfigure the grid - seeing not just where a vehicle is now but where it will be after a series of moves and what that creates or blocks - is the cognitive skill the game exercises. Working backward from the desired final state is often the most efficient approach: identify where the target vehicle needs to be, trace what needs to move for that to happen, trace what needs to move for those movements to be possible, and so on until you reach moves that can be executed immediately from the current state.

Traffic Jam uses vehicles of different sizes that occupy different amounts of grid space. Standard cars occupy two squares. Lorries and buses occupy three squares. The larger vehicles create more significant blocking obstacles but also, when moved, clear larger sections of their lane simultaneously. Puzzles that feature many large vehicles have fewer total pieces but more complex interactions, since moving a three-square lorry affects more of the grid than moving a two-square car. Understanding how the size of each vehicle affects the spatial impact of moving it is part of the tactical assessment that experienced players perform before committing to a sequence.

Puzzle Progression and Difficulty

Traffic Jam sequences its puzzles to introduce increasing complexity gradually. Early puzzles feature sparse grids where the path to the solution is relatively short and the relationships between vehicles are easy to visualise. Later puzzles pack the grid densely with vehicles whose movements are tightly interdependent, requiring chains of six or more preparatory moves before the primary blocking vehicles can even be addressed. The difficulty progression is well-calibrated - each tier of difficulty requires the problem-solving approach developed in the previous tier rather than an entirely new strategy.

Tips for Solving Traffic Jam Puzzles

Scan the entire grid before making any move. Identify all vehicles that directly block the target's path, then identify all vehicles that block those vehicles, building a mental dependency map. Vehicles near the edges of the grid often have more freedom to move since they have open space in one direction - prioritise moves that push blocking vehicles toward the grid edge rather than toward other vehicles. On complex puzzles where you feel stuck, try undoing your recent moves and approaching from a different starting point - sometimes a wrong early move creates a configuration that cannot be solved, and the solution requires a counterintuitive initial move.
