How to Play Diver Down

Navigate your diver through underwater environments using directional controls, managing your oxygen meter as you explore. Oxygen depletes continuously and runs out faster at greater depths - returning to the surface replenishes it, but every trip back costs time and exploration range. Collect treasures, artefacts, and valuable materials scattered across the environment for currency and progression rewards. Avoid dangerous sea creatures that patrol certain areas and will end your dive if they reach you. Managing depth, oxygen, and threat positions simultaneously is the moment-to-moment challenge.

Underwater Environments and Visual Design

Diver Down's different environment types each have distinct visual and gameplay characters. Coral reef sections are dense with colour and life, with complex geometry that provides both navigation challenges and hiding spots from predators. Shipwreck sections are darker and more claustrophobic, with the atmospheric presence of human history beneath the waves. Deep trench sections are darker still, with different species and more intense oxygen pressure that makes extended exploration at depth significantly more costly than shallow areas.

Oxygen Management and Risk Calculation

The oxygen system in Diver Down creates a constant risk-reward calculation. Going deeper to reach richer treasure deposits costs more oxygen per unit of time. Exploring further from the surface risks running out before you can return. Carrying oxygen tanks as upgrades extends your range but adds management complexity. The optimal dive is one that maximises treasure collection within the oxygen budget - identifying the highest-value items in the reachable area and routing efficiently to collect them before the gauge forces you up.

Sea Creatures and Underwater Threats

The ocean in Diver Down is not empty of threats. Various sea creatures patrol different environment sections with behaviours that range from passive avoidance to active pursuit. Understanding which creatures are dangerous and reading their patrol patterns before entering their territory lets you navigate around them safely. Some predators can be temporarily deterred by specific actions. Others require simply routing around their patrol areas using the environment's geometry for cover. Learning the ecosystem is part of becoming a confident diver.

Progression and Equipment Upgrades

Treasure and artefacts collected during dives fund equipment upgrades that meaningfully expand what is possible on subsequent dives. Oxygen tank upgrades extend your maximum depth range and exploration time. Swim fin upgrades improve movement speed, reducing the time cost of each dive's travel. Pressure suit upgrades reduce oxygen depletion at depth, making deeper areas more accessible. Each upgrade opens sections of the ocean that were previously too costly to reach, creating a satisfying progression arc that rewards persistent play.
