What is Pokemon Emerald?

Hoenn is distinctive among Pokemon regions for its heavy emphasis on water routes and surfing. A significant portion of the map is ocean, and the HM Surf is required earlier and more extensively than in previous regions. This aquatic emphasis gives the region a distinct atmosphere and introduces a large roster of Water-type Pokemon that are relevant throughout the main story. The region also features weather mechanics - rain, harsh sunlight, sandstorms - that affect both exploration and battles in ways that earlier regions did not.

The Secret Bases system allows players to create personalised hideouts in specific terrain features across Hoenn. Decorating and customising these bases with furniture, dolls, and mats provided a level of personalisation rare in games of its era and remains one of Emerald's most fondly remembered features.

The Battle Frontier

The Battle Frontier is the post-game content that separates Emerald from its predecessors and from most Pokemon games that followed. Seven facilities, each with its own format and rules, challenge you to apply Pokemon knowledge at a level the main story never requires. The Battle Factory provides random Pokemon and tests your ability to make good team decisions with unfamiliar options. The Battle Palace restricts your ability to give direct commands. The Battle Pike presents a gauntlet of rooms with random encounters and limited healing.

Earning the Gold Symbol from each facility - the reward for reaching high enough winning streaks - is one of the most challenging achievements in the series. Players who have completed the main story often spend more time in the Battle Frontier than in the campaign itself.
